The urban nomads

This is a team project of speculative design for future workplace.

I designed a pop-up sunshade for the “Urban Nomads,”

a group of people in the future who are

highly mobile, “multi-hyphenated,” “solopreneurs,”

leading a work-life merged lifestyle.

Based on our team’s research and observation of

current workplace and the generation of millennials,

we found out that there are a growing number of people

who work for themselves as “solopreneurs,”

dabble in a lot of different fields,

adapt quickly to learning new and different skills,

leading a career of multiple job titles as “multi-hyphenates”

and constantly moving, traveling, as mobile workers.

.We call them the “Urban Nomads.”

Experiment on Being an urban nomad

Crissy Field

After actually trying to be an urban nomad and working mobile in an outdoor environment,

We soon realized that there are at least three problem:

need for power source and other office devices and technologies

need for a portable working desk

need for some sort of shield that provides sunshade and privacy.

So each one of team members was responsible for working on solving these three different problems.

I was responsible for designing a pop-up sunshade.

Inspirations

I am inspired by the modern Ro Chair designed by Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hansen and the collapsible hamper in my bedroom.

And hoped that I can design the pop-up sunshade as some sort of fusion between these two objects.
